'Unique Thrift Store' in Watchung Draws Crowd, But Some Question Their Methods

Monday was 25 percent-off day and a herd of bargain hunters packed the parking lot of Unique Thrift shop in Watchung.

Inside, shoppers moved from rack-to-rack delighting in their finds: Ralph Lauren dresses retailing for $14.99, Steve Madden shoes going for a cool $24.99 and pinstripe shirts for $4.99 each.

Unique isn't your mother's thrift shop, but a modern day thrift shop with items that's selling everything from Badgley Mischka gowns (priced at $700 and up in department stores) for a mere $114.99 to Stride Rite shoes ($3.99).

Shoppers love it, but members of the non-profit community are raising brows in unease at how Unique obtains it's electronic merchandise.

Unlike thrift store Goodwill, Unique is not a charity. It is a for-profit business that contracts with charities to pick up and buy their donated goods at bulk rates and keeps whatever it makes on resale, The Star-Ledger reported.
