The Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced Tuesday that the Army and the Department of Veterans Affairs have entered into a formal agreement that will allow Arlington National Cemetery employees to enroll in the VA's National Cemetery Administration Training Center."
"While Arlington National Cemetery's unique military mission sets us apart from other national cemeteries, we are committed to learning from and partnering with experts in cemetery administration to improve overall operations," McHugh said.
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration maintains 131 national cemeteries in 39 states, including Puerto Rico, in addition to 33 soldier’s lots and monument sites.
Their training center emphasizes technical, supervisory and leadership training for all employees including equipment operators, groundskeepers and cemetery representatives.
"We believe this unique professional development opportunity will help our employees develop the skills needed to better meet their mission," said McHugh, who also announced the selection of Patrick Halliman as Superintendent. Halliman was the former director of field programs for the VA's NCA.
"Pat Hallinan's unique experience in national cemetery management, combined with his proven leadership and ability, made him the only choice possible for this important job," McHugh said.
