Former Sanford, NC Policeman Turned EMS Chief Charged with Sexual Battery

An arrest warrant for the former chief of the Garner, North Carolina EMS & Rescue Squad has been issued charging William J. Frederick with sexual battery, The Raleigh News & Observer reported Friday.

Frederick, who is expected to surrender to police sometime this weekend, according to Lt. Chris Hagwood, resigned last month, six days after a woman alleged that he allegedly attacked her in the former offices of the rescue squad located on Seventh Avenue. Frederick told the chairman of the squad's board of directors that his resignation was due to personal reasons.

WRAL.COM reported that Frederick resigned from the Sanford, NC police department in 1996 amid allegations that he traded leniency on criminal charges in exchange for sexual favors. He was later convicted of attempted obstruction of justice and was placed on probation.

The sex assault probe prompted Garner officials to prematurely end its contract with the EMS squad for search and rescue services. The squad's duties were turned over to the Garner Volunteer Fire Department earlier this month.
