Actor Tom Bosley, who played the All-American, understanding father, Howard Cunningham on television's 1970s top-rated comedy series "Happy Days," died Tuesday of heart failure at a hospital near Palm Springs, California.
Bosley's agent, Sheryl Abrams, said the actor was also battling lung cancer.
In 2004, TV Guide ranked Bosley's character No. 9 on "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time."
Bosley, a Windy City native, co-starred with the late Natalie Woods in 1963's "Love with the Proper Stranger." It was his first Motion Picture role.
Other films include "The World of Henry Orient," "Divorce American Style," and the made-for-television "The Triangle Factory Fire Scandal." Bosley shared a heartfelt story about his experience with the Holocaust in the documentary film, "Paper Clips."
Bosley, who served in the United States Navy during World War II, was 83 and leaves wife of 30-years, Patricia Carr to mourn.
