Pentagon Confirms Deaths of Two Operation Enduring Freedom Marines

The Department of Defense announced the deaths of two Marines who were serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Helmand province, Afghanistan this week.

Lance Cpl. John T. Sparks, was a machine gunner assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines Regiment of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, California. Sparks, 23, a native of Chicago, Illinois joined the Marines in February 2008 and was on his first tour of duty in the war zone.

He was the recipient of the National Defense Medal, the global war on terrorism medal, and was posthumously awarded the combat action ribbon and the purple heart. Sparks died October 8.


Sgt. Frank R. Zaehringer III, who died Oct. 11, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Forces at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Zaehringer, 23, of Reno, Nevada is a 2005 graduate of Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada. He joined the Marines in 2007, according to his mother, Sharon Zaehringer, who described her son as a young man who helped "those who could not help themselves."

Zaehringer was on a foot patrol when he stepped on an explosive device and died of his injuries early Monday.

Zaehringer's tour of duty began in August and was his second. He is survived by his parents; wife, Cassie and sister Nicole.
