Off-Duty Sanford, NC Police Officer Charged in Fatal Wreck

A Sanford police officer has been charged in connection with an accident that left a 61-year-old man dead.

Reginald Petty, a Captain with the Sanford police Department, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.

The victim, William Thomas slowed to turn left into a business on Beal Blvd. off of route 421 when Petty, 47, driving a Cadillac, hit Thomas' Chevrolet pickup truck from behind causing it to spin into the northbound lanes of Hwy 421. The truck hit a vehicle driven by Nancy Pajdo, 47 and overturned. Thomas died on the way to the hospital. Padjo was not injured.

Capt. Petty, who was off-duty at the time of the accident, was transported to Central Carolina Hospital with unspecified injuries and remains on paid leave from the police department.
