Chicago police are looking for a gunman who sprayed a family minivan, killing a six-month-old baby Monday afternoon as her father changed her diaper.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told CNN News that the shooter was gunning "exclusively" for the baby's father, Jonathan Watkins, and that his officers were not ruling the shooting out as a possible act of gang violence.
McCarthy did not say if Watkins had any known ties to local gangs or been involved in any criminal activity that would have placed his life in danger. Watkins daughter, Jonylah, was shot multiple times and died today at Comer Children's Hospital of her injuries.
Watkins, who was rushed to Northwestern Hospital, remains in serious condition. Despite his condition, he was able to speak with the Chicago Sun-Times by telephone where he told reporters that he was trying to help his daughter after the shooting and that he knew she had died.
McCarthy seemed frustrated as he spoke to reporters, confirming that police had no suspects at the moment.
"We don't have one individual who's stepping up to help us," McCarthy said.
CNN Hero nominee, Diane Latiker, who lives in Chicago echoed McCarthy's frustration over the shooting and the lack of cooperating witnesses. "Hearing about this baby -- I was so outraged. It just is so beyond," said Latiker. "I will stay outraged but the problem is that people in our community are not speaking up, they are not speaking at all. We are not vocal enough. We're too silent."
Police say the shooter fled the scene on foot before jumping into a blue van.
