Summer Streets 2012 Concert – Sunday, Aug. 5th

August 3, 2012: The East 204th Street & Bainbridge Avenue Merchants Association (E204St & BAMA), in collaboration with the Mosholu Preservation Corporation and Bronx Community Board 7, is hosting its 2nd Summer Streets event series, a Department of Transportation (DOT)-sponsored "Temporary Pedestrian Street/Weekend Walks" program. Last Sunday's event was a huge success featuring DOT Helmet Fittings, Salsa Lessons, a bouncy house and many merchants displaying their products and services.

The intent of the program is to create a recurring, multi-block, pedestrian street to promote local businesses and organizations. The purpose of the Summer Streets 2012 events is to help stimulate the local neighborhood economy and bring community residents together.

We invite you to join us this Sunday, August 5^th, from 12PM-5PM, along E. 204th Street between Bainbridge & Decatur Avenues, to enjoy a fun-filled, family-friendly day in this vibrant community.

The day will feature the Summer Streets 2012 Concert, with DJ Good Times and hosted by Anthony & Eileen of BronxNet's No Offense But... TV show! Highlights include Latin sensation Anayka, Italian Hip Hop Movement artist SALESE, new voice of music W.R.A.T.H, Hugga ROCKZ, rapper Young H, Bachata singer El Happy High, Puerto Rican poet/singer/performer La Bruja, R&B singer Winston Ward, Merengue singer En Alta and Latin Empire Entertainment artists, LoZoneros, a group born and raised in the Bronx bringing a whole new sound to the Latin urban movement, international recording artist Veronica Kole, and Salsa singer Arlene G! Bronx Cops Suspended After Video Shows Them 'Beating' a Suspect

Two NYPD cops have been suspended -- and face possible arrest -- in the wake of a shocking videotape which shows one of the officers brutally punching and kicking a handcuffed suspect lying on a sidewalk.

The graphic video also shows two NYPD sergeants nearby doing nothing to stop the Jan. 5 assault, law-enforcement sources said last night.

Officers John Cicero and William Green had been suspended and were under investigation by the Bronx District Attorney’s office. The two sergeants were also suspended.

"It wasn't as bad as Rodney King," said one source, while admitting the attack was vicious.

The violence occurred on a chaotic night on Davidson Avenue near Fordham Road.

Cicero and Green, who were undercover, were arresting four men when one of them ran into a building and down to a basement apartment.

Three cops chased him into the apartment, where a pit bull charged out.

One officer fired at the dog -- hitting its paw -- before the bullet ricocheted. Bullet fragments injured Detectives Thomas Guarino and Thomas McHale.

Meanwhile, a swarm of cops had arrived and were detaining at least three suspects, sources said.

One of those handcuffed suspects, who was on the ground, allegedly told rookie Officer Cicero "that it should have been him who should have been shot and killed," a source said.

Cicero then attacked the man, according to a source who saw the video, which an area resident took from a nearby apartment window.
"He's punching and kicking him when he's on the ground handcuffed," that source said.

Green is seen on the video throwing a punch at the handcuffed man, the source said.

Two sergeants -- one of whom has been identified as Junior Carela -- are seen on the video standing by while the beating occurs, the source said.

The person who shot the video brought it to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, which opened a criminal investigation and then contacted NYPD Internal Affairs, which began its own probe, sources said.

Cicero was suspended last week, a source said

Carela and the other, unidentified sergeant, have been placed on modified desk duty, and stripped of their guns and shields, sources said.

Green was suspended yesterday -- only after the NYPD mistakenly suspended another cop who had been suspected of throwing the punch, before learning that he had not even been at the scene.

'Bronx Princess' Free Outdoor Screening Set For 1 September in Bronx

The Rooftop Films free outdoor screening of BRONX PRINCESS {Documentary Film HDCAM Digital VideoFestival/Academic Length: 38 min / 30 minBroadcast Length: 26 min} has been delayed due to inclement weather.

The feature will instead be shown on Tuesday, Sepetember 1 at 9 pm in Mullaly Park in the Bronx (corner of East 165th Street and Jerome Avenue next to Yankee Stadium).

There will also be West African musical performances by Blitz the Ambassador, Mamarazzi, and storyteller Kewulay Kamara. They will begin at 6 pm.

Bronx Princess tells the story of a 17-year-old West African girl who leaves her mom in New York City to reunite with her father, a chief in Ghana. Filmed during the summer after her last year in High School to her freshman year in college, the film is follows Rocky as she explores her West African parents ideas about adulthood and other issues. In the end, Rocky reconciles her African heritage with her dream of independence.

This coming-of-age documentary is sure to be a hit. Don't miss the broadcast on POV series on PBS in next month.

Bronx Princess, which premiered at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and the Berlinale, is a Yoni Brook production made possible by The Independent Television Service (ITVS) and The Corporation for Public Broadcasting Cinereach.

Brook, a former photojournalist for the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, and The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, is now an independent photographer and film director. Some of his work includes photographing Hurricane Katrina for Fortune Magazine. Brook's keen ability to elevate an ordinary photographic moment into a story without using a word is phenomenal.

He has earned the field's highest honors at the Pictures of the Year International and he was the youngest ever to be selected for Photo District News' “30 Photographers to Watch”. At one time he was an instructor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

Brook directed "A Son’s Sacrifice" (One of my favorite documentary films!) which won the Best Documentary Short at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and was distributed by The US State Department to over 130 consulates and embassies around the world as part of its religious diversity initiative.
