Education: Big Up's to Nas!

By: Jas

Over the years, Hip-Hop has become a revolutionary art form that connects all people. Hip-Hop has taught youth, especially from the inner city, how to express themselves. Nasir Jones, 39-year-old rapper from Queens, NY,  has been a heavy player in the Hip-Hop industry since the early 90’s—bringing light to controversial issues and spitting unfiltered truth.

God’s son now has a fellowship named after him at Harvard University. The W.E.B Du Bois Institute and the Hip- Hop Archive announced the Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellowship on Tuesday.  The fellowship is to provide chosen scholars and artist with an opportunity to show “education is real power.”

Bridging the gap between sociology and literature, Fellows will develop projects that will add unique and progressive value to a rich Hip-Hop history and respect that tradition through historically rooted critical insight. Projects may include manuscripts, performance pieces, album work, curriculum panning, primary archival research and exhibition preparation.

Nas told Revolt TV, “My hopes are that greed for knowledge, art, self-determination and expression go a long way. It is a true honor to have my name attached to so much hard work, alongside great names like Henry Louis Gates Jr. and W.E.B. Du Bois and to such a prestigious and historical institution, and all in the name of the music I grew to be a part of.”

Another young brother killed for no apparent reason. This really is getting out of hand. I've never heard of this artists campaign, but at the same should his death be of less coverage? The fact is that our young black men are dying at the hands of gun violence and the second hip-hop acknowledges this fact is the day hip-hop will become truly enlightened.

The Game May Face Criminal Charges After 580K of his Tweeters Call LA Sheriff's Station

By Alicia Cruz
The Black Urban Times

Hip Hop artist the Game could be facing hefty criminal charges after he claims someone hacked his Twitter account and tweeted the telephone number of The Los Angeles County sheriff's department's Compton station Friday telling all 580,000 of the rapper's followers to ring the station.

Captain Mike Parker told the Los Angeles Times that Game instructed his followers to make the calls if they were looking for an internship with the artist. The barrage of calls inundated the Department's emergency phone system beginning around 5;20 p.m. and lasting more than two hours.

The singer, whose real name is Jayceon Terrell Taylor, later tweeted that his account had been hacked, and then added that it was all "an accident."  Los Angeles County investigators have said they will forward a criminal complaint to the district attorney's office.

The 31-year-old Compton native once told an MTV News reporter that his father was a gangster with the California street gang, the Nutty Block Crip and his mother was a Hoover Crippelet. The artist spent time in a foster home around age 7, but went on to become a Grammy nominated music artist.

His previous legal troubles include an October 2005 arrest in Greensboro, NC after he and his entourage surrounded a Mall security cop in a threatening manner while sporting full Halloween face masks. Investigators say the group refused to leave the mall and the police were called. Game chalked the incident up to police officers simply overreacting and said Mall security cops pepper sprayed him for no reason. The five officers involved in the incident ended up suing Game for defamation. No word on a settlement. Game faced criminal charges of disorderly conduct a few others.

A February 2007 incident at a South Los Angeles basketball game led to the singer being arrested in May 2007 and charged with assault and weapons offenses. In February 2008, the rapper copped a no-contest plea to a felony weapons charge and was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 150 hours of community service and three years probation.

Game, Snoop Dogg, and Tha Dogg Pound, were sued for assaulting a fan on stage during a May 2005 concert at the White River Amphitheater in Auburn, Washington. The accuser, Richard Monroe, Jr., claimed the rappers entourage beat him down after he took them up on an offer to mount the stage. As he attempted to do so, he said Snoop's bodyguards grabbed him and pummeled him into unconsciousness. The victim alleged that crew members along with the rapper and producer Soopafly also joined in on the bum rush. ; Snoop and Game were included in the suit for not intervening. The lawsuit, which named Snoop and the Game for not intervening, requested a pecuniary claim of $22 million in punitive and compensatory damages; battery, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The father of three, reportedly resides in Glendale, California where he purchased a home in the Kenneth Village community, the Los Angeles Times reported. Game announced plans to marry Valeisha Butterfield, the daughter of U.S. Congressman G. K. Butterfield, in March 2007. However, the engagement was off nine prior to their wedding date.

Pitchfork Media announced on June 3, 2011, that Game is working with Odd Future leader Tyler, The Creator on a track called "Martians vs. Goblins."
