VANCEBORO, N.C. — And then there were none. The Vanceboro Police Department is losing both members of its force.
On Monday night, town leaders accepted the immediate resignation of police officer Mike Burnett. Immediately after the Town Council’s meeting was adjourned, Mayor Chad Braxton met with acting Police Chief Jason Buck to discuss Buck’s replacement.
Buck and Burnett are the department’s only officers.
"There’s nothing we’re doing to drive them away," Braxton said. "But they see opportunities for advancement and they leave us."
Glen Clark, who works at the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, could be Vanceboro’s police chief by next week. If he becomes police chief, he will still be employed by the Sheriff’s Office.
Buck had served just shy of a year as police chief when he announced his intention to leave the post in October. He has been the town’s acting police chief since then during the search for his replacement. Burnett’s resignation came almost a year to the day after he was hired as a part-time officer for the town.
Both Buck and Burnett have returned to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.
The starting date for the new chief has not been set nor has there been a timeline established to replace Burnett.
