Yahoo To Nix GeoCities, Other Services in Revamp

In response to a revamp, Yahoo Inc. has announced plans to close Geocities, Yahoo Briefcase, Farechase, My Web, RSS ads, Yahoo Pets, Yahoo Live, Kickstart, Yahoo For Teachers and a publishing and hosting service it bought at the height of the dot-com boom back in 1999.
A statement released by Yahoo Inc officials read, "As part of Yahoo's ongoing effort to build products and services that deliver the best possible experiences for consumers and results for advertisers, we are increasing investment in some areas while scaling back in others."
The scale back has been a slow process beginning in 2007 when Jerry Yang was the chief executive officer. With the new year came a new CEO, Carol Bartz. Yahoo Inc accelerated their scale-back to include announcing their intention to lay off 700 workers. This will be the company's third round of job cuts in just 14 months. Adios, Geocities, I will miss you dearly.
The mentioned services will be shut down later this year. Visitors to the site are now greeted with a message informing them that new GeoCities accounts will not be available. It gives them the option to sign up for Yahoo's Web hosting service for a small fee: $5.98 a month.
Yahoo shares rose 7 cents yesterday to close at $14.55.
