Burning Coffee Grinds May Be Cause of Emergency Landing

Southwest Airline Flight 693 departed Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Conneticut this morning bound for Orlando, Florida when a flight attendant smelled something burning in the rear galley. The flight crew was alerted after passengers in the last two rows were given portable oxygen masks. The flight crew declared an emergency and diverted the plane. Within minutes the flight landed safely. No injuries were reported.
According to an FAA official Jim Peters, the preliminary investigation revealed no internal or external damage to the plane, and no sign of electrical problems. Instead, inspectors believed the odor was caused by coffee grinds that were in a coffee pot in the plane's rear galley. The flight was carrying 131 passengers and five crew members.
