White House Apologizes To Mom of Murdered Marine

First, the mom of a murdered Brooklyn Marine got a "form letter" response from the White House - then she got an apology. Henryka Pietrzak-Varga was deeply upset last month when she received a standard letter from a White House aide, Michael Kelleher, that urged her to contact the White House if "you still need help with a federal agency."

The White House discovered the cold-hearted error after the Daily News asked for a reaction to the mom's disappointment, which she outlined in a Polish newspaper.

It wasn't long before a White House spokesman called The News to say President Obama described the murder of Sgt. Jan Pawel Pietrzak and his wife, Quiana, as a "tragic loss" and thanked the mother "for her son's service and sacrifice for this country."

"Mr. Kelleher called Mrs. Pietrzak-Varga to apologize for the error," the spokeswoman said. "Mrs. Pietrzak-Varga accepted his apology, and the two spoke for approximately half an hour." The Brooklyn mom could not be reached for comment last night.
The Pietrzaks were tortured and killed in their California home last October. Four Marines have been charged with the grisly crime.
Prosecutors insist the Pietrzaks were slain for money, but a homicide investigator testified the accused Marines spray-painted racist remarks on the walls of the victims' house.
Polish-born Pietrzak, 24, was white and raised in Bensonhurst, where his mother still lives. His 26-year-old wife was black. So are the charged Marines.
In the note to Obama that sparked the form letter, Pietrzak-Varga opened with the words: "Dear President-elect Barack Obama, they killed my son."
She then asked for help in investigating the "bestial" murders.
In a five-paragraph reply, Kelleher thanked her for contacting Obama and added, "We hope the issue you brought to the President's attention has been resolved."
