NEWARK -A 20-year-old Newark man was sentenced to life in prison today for the fatal shooting of an Irvington man last year.

Mumeen Starks shot and killed Theo Stewart, 26, after an argument between Starks and Stewart’s cousin on April 18, 2008, said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow.

Stewart intervened in the argument and walked his cousin to his vehicle, but as he tried to start the car, Starks drew a handgun and fired three rounds, striking Stewart twice in the back, Loriquet said.

Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Iu tried the case, according to Loriquet, and jury deliberations were completed in roughly three hours.
