The off-duty New Jersey police officer Gerald Veneziano who was shot Saturday en route to work told investigators that his shooter followed him from the Clifton, New Jersey to Fairfield the day he was shot.
Officer Veneziano, a three-year veteran of the police department, awoke from his coma yesterday and is still in critical condition, but was able to communicate with officials.

Veneziano, who was struck multiple times in the abdomen, was found conscious by fellow officers on Fairfield Road just after 6:15 pm. Seriously wounded, Veneziano managed to tell officers that the man who shot him was driving a black Dodge with New Jersey tags.

The 26 year-old officer was shot as he walked towards the vehicle and managed to cap off 13 shots. It is not known if his bullets wounded the suspect.

Obviously, it is the strong will of the young officer that saved his life. He was not wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time of the shooting.

Police are offering $45,000 reward hoping to encourage anyone with knowledge of the shooting or suspect to come forward.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said Tuesday that Fairfield Officer Gerald Veneziano is still in critical condition, but has been able to communicate.
