Officer Veneziano Due For More Surgery

The vehicle Fairfield police are searching for in relation to the shooting of officer Gerald Veneziano this past Saturday may be one of three Dodge models – Caliber, Nitro or Magnum.

At a press conference tonight, acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said that police are seeking any information from the public that might aid them in the apprehension of the suspect or suspects that have left officer Veneziano, of Belleville, fighting for his life in University Hospital.

Laurino said that Veneziano has been in and out of consciousness and is scheduled for more surgery. "He was shot multiple times, is in shock and severely traumatized," said Laurino.

Laurino said police are examining "all previous cases" including "anyone he pulled over or arrested" in their search for those responsible for shooting the officer.

Despite his condition, including a breathing tube, Veneziano managed to tell investigators that the suspects may have been targeting him and told them that the vehicle bore New Jersey tags. He said that he believes he was followed from the Clifton area on Route 3 into Fairfield near 300 Fairfield Road.

He was shot at approximately 6:15 p.m. on January 30 after he got out of his private vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Passat and approached the suspect’s vehicle. He was not in uniform nor was he wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time.

Arriving officers found Veneziano lying next to his vehicle, bleeding and semi conscious.

Laurino confirmed that Veneziano, a three year veteran of the police force, did fire approximately 13 rounds at the suspects, but cannot confirm if the suspects were hit.
Previous reports stated that Veneziano called in the tags of the vehicle before he was shot, but these were incorrect. The officer attempted to have the plates ran by calling another officer who was on duty at the time.

Veneziano used his cell phone to call an on-duty police officer, but the officer was at a local restaurant and did not make contact with Veneziano.

In the days since the shooting, officials have formed a massive task force to aid Fairfield police in apprehending the suspects and determining how the shooting began.

The law enforcement agencies involved in the Task Force are: the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is the lead agency, Fairfield Police Department, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Newark Police Department, New Jersey State Police and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.

Anyone with information should call the Fairfield Tip Line at 973-227-1400.

A $45,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the suspects.
