Second Water Main Break in Jersey Has Locals up in Arms

by Alicia Cruz
The Black Urban Times

As if New Jerseyans haven't had enough headache to deal with after Wednesday nights power outage, along comes the rupture of a 30-foot pipe along Washington Boulevard and 18th Street just after midnight that left thousands of Newport residents without water...again.

Just last Thursday, the same pipe blew a gasket and 18 months before that residents had to deal with another rupture.

Residents are a little riled up over the repeated breaks and want some answers. So does the city.

Sergeant Greg Kierce of Jersey City Emergency Management says he is working with United Water to figure out the exact cause of the recent ruptures.

"We want to find out what the cause is and prevent it from happening again. The last thing we want to do is interrupt the norm for residents here," said Kierce.

United Water is working diligently to find the source o the problem and resolve it expeditiously for the sake of customers.
