Wrecking Ball begins demolition of Giants Stadium

Today marks the day for demolition work to begin on Giants Stadium.

Saying good-bye to the 34-year-old stadium will be tough for many who have gone from adolescence to adulthood watching some of the most memorable sporting events and concerts at the venue beginning with the grand opening in 1976.

The Giants game against the Dallas Cowboys, their first regular season game ever played at stadium, kicked off on October 10, 1976. The Giants lost to the Cowboys 24-14.

Soccer legend Pelé played an exhibition match, his final game, between the Cosmos and Santos. He played the first half for the Cosmos and the second half for his old Brazilian club team.

And who could forget the 1995 Mass performed by the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II.

Then came the coupe de gras: the 2009 U2 concert that broke the record for the largest crowd to ever at the stadium with 84,472 music fans.

The saga of Giants Stadium, which includes the urban legend claiming the remains of Jimmy Hoffa were buried under one of the end zones since his 1976 disappearance coincided with the construction of the stadium, is a lengthy one and what better way to tell it than with a song.

"Wrecking Ball" one of the newest tunes by Long Branch native, Bruce Springsteen, is an anthem dedicated to the state of New Jersey, the Giants, and Giants Stadium.

Springsteen, 60, kicked off his sold-out concert by dedicating the show to the "old lady," referring to the stadium, and told his fans how...FULL ARTICLE
