Cali Truck Driver Busted for Weed Blames... Love

A California truck driver caught with 147 pounds of marijuana worth $516,000 in his truck has been sentenced to four years in state prison.

Michael Daley, 39, of Oakland, California was stopped by police on Route 80 in New Jersey on March 10, 2008 and charged with conspiracy and possession of marijuana for the purpose of distribution after police searched his rig and found the marijuana.
Daley's first trial ended in a hung jury. Less than a week later, the trucker pleaded guilty rather than risk going to trial and facing 20 years in prison if he was convicted.

The plea deal offered him a five-year sentence, the same his co-defendant and girlfriend, Adeilei Mosley-Bakari, 35, of Atlanta received.

Daley's defense was...love. The Jamaica native told the court, “I made a big mistake, the biggest mistake of my life. I’m sorry. I’ll take the punishment.”
He claimed he participated in the transportation of the marijuana at her request and in exchange for cash to pay off his truck.
Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Kelley Lavery said the notion that Daley was “a victim of love is belied by the facts of this case,” he was equally culpable and should receive the same five year term as the woman.

Under the plea deal agreement, Daley will become eligible for parole in nine months and 26 days. He must also pay $2,700 in fines and penalties.
