A Long Island police dog was forced to fight off...another dog while chasing a suspected heroin dealer in Hempsted Thursday.
Dwayne Turner took off while Nassau County police were conducting a drug bust. After shouting for Turner to stop running, a Canine Unit officer let his dog, Maverick loose on Turner as he ran along Whitson Street.
As Maverick was in pursuit of Turner, another civilian doggie named Tiger attacked Maverick and the fight was on.
Maverick, defending himself, bit Tiger, an Akita, on the head and neck after Tiger took a bite out of his hind leg.
Police officers at the scene of the doggie dust-up eventually managed to separate the scrapping pooches and the heroin dealer turned runaway track star was eventually captured.
Maverick is well and recovering after being taken to a Long Island Veterinary Specialist.
Tiger's owner, Americo Frezza, 64, was cited under a Hempstead Village Ordinance for having a loose dog. Tiger was said to be unlicensed and had no record of mandatory rabies and distemper shots. Ouch!
The roving Akita was seized by Hempstead Animal Control and taken to the pound.
Turner was charged with three counts each of criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal sale of a controlled substance and arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
