A passenger riding a New Jersey Transit bus Wednesday telephone police after witnessing another passenger, who turned out to be a 16-year-old girl, hiding a handgun in a sock, then placing it inside of her backpack.

Montclair Township police Lt. Scott Buehler told the New Jersey Local News Service that the East Orange teen was arrested in Montclair after the passenger telephoned police about 3:40 p.m. Officers stopped the number 29 bus at Bloomfield and Gates avenues, where they found a passenger matching the caller’s description.

Buehler said officers observed a sock on top of the contents of the teens opened backpack and discovered it held a Raven Arms .25-caliber handgun that was loaded. She has been charged with possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and remanded to the Essex County Youth House, said Buehler.
