'Top Ranked' School Facing Board Ed Probe in Grade Fudging Scandal

Last Fall, when Theatre Arts Production Company High School Principal Lynn Passarella announced the school ranked first on New York City's A-through-F progress-report ratings, students erupted...into laughter.

One student said, "We all know it's a bad school," the New York Post reported.
A senior at the "top ranked school" bragged to a New York Post reporter, "This week, my average is a 30; in three days I can bring it up to a 95."

A year after that rating, the school is now being probed by The Department of Education for its alleged guileless academic system that makes it so easy for students to pass a class that kids say "even a caveman could do it."

Students told the Post teachers hand out pre-composed test sheets, and "you can just copy them. It's for the school so it doesn't look bad with failing grades," said another unidentified student.

In November 2010, High School for International Business and Finance Assistant Principal Kalliopi Hatzivasilis came under investigation by the Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation after she admitted to "mistakenly" boosting students’ grades in order for them to pass the corresponding Regents exam.  Hatzivasilis reportedly made changes to as many as 22 students' transcripts in some cases, three years after students had completed those courses.
