The Black Urban Times Latino News
Wepa! It's on and smoking as New Yorkers, family, friends and fellow artists of the lovely Rita Moreno gather to celebrate the actresses 80th birthday.
The Bronx native settled into the borough during the 1930s with her family and immediately began dreaming of a career in entertainment. Throughout her illustrious career, this versatile Boricua has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, and was the second Puerto Rican to win an Academy Award.
Born Rosa Dolores Alverío in Humacao, Puerto Rico, (La Perla del Oriente) Moreno landed her first Broadway role as "Angelina" in Skydrift at the age of 13. The rest, as they say, was history.
In 2009, President Barack Obama presented Moreno with the National Medal of Arts. The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) followed the honor with an HOLA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
The Latina sensation, who calls herself a "show business animal" says she has no plans to stop now after performing for three quarters of a century. And her fans are glad to hear that. Feliz cumpleaños, Senorita!
