Slain Marines Mother Fights to Change Culture of Marine Corps

The mother of slain Marine, Maria Lauterbach remains a fixture in North Carolina courtrooms and a permanent voice as she struggles to change the culture within the Marine Corps where crimes and allegations of rape and domestic abuse are concerned.

Mary Lauterbach of Vandalia, Ohio, flanked by her attorney Merle Wilberding, recently sat in the gallery of a North Carolina Court of Appeals hearing in Raleigh, N.C.  as lawyers for former Marine Cesar Lauren argued that his first-degree murder conviction should be overturned due to an error by the presiding judge.
 
 Laurean is currently serving his life sentence at the Pasquotank Correctional Facility in North Carolina, a maximum security prison for men. Since his August 2010 arrival, Laurean has not had any infractions, according to his N.C. Department of Corrections record. His wife, Christina Laurean, has since divorced him and remarried.
