Black Men R N Dainja

We are human beings and we declare our right to be human beings, and we will bring this into existence by any means necessary.”-Malcolm X

2012 is considered the end of humanity for some people but it definitely became the end for Trayvon Martin, the latest victim of racial profiling by an authority figure.
If you haven’t heard, Martin is a 17 year old African American male who was walking home from the store after buying some skittles in Sanford, Florida. While walking home, Martin noticed George Zimmerman, a 28 year old self-appointed neighborhood watch captain following him. So Martin put his hoodie over his head and then began walking faster. That is when Zimmerman chased after him and he ended up shooting and killing Martin because he felt Martin was a threat to his well-being (ABCNews). It looks like Zimmerman followed the motto, “Shoot first, Ask questions later”.

Martin was killed for what, being black and wearing a hoodie. I remember back in the days when white people were known for physically threatening minorities/non-whites while riding around on horses and wearing white hoods. It amazes me at how small minded and ignorant people can still be since the Jim Crow days. From the pictures of the two gentlemen, Zimmerman is much bigger than Martin, the fact that he saw Martin as a threat means that his point of view was really distorted. Every image of the mythological black man that he has ever seen on television or stories that has been passed down to him by his family members must have all been in his mind during the time of this murder. After all of these weeks, Zimmerman is still free and has not been in jail yet. When it comes to innocent black people unjustifiably getting killed nothing happens, but when it’s a guilty black person unjustifiably killing someone, they can find every reason to put him or her under the jail.

When will racism end? I believe it will never end but it can decrease dramatically when that old 1850s way of thinking from every race that gets passed down from generation to generation finally dies out.

*Condolences to the family of Trayvon Martin.
