Federal Detention Center Guard in Ronell Wilson Sex Scandal, Nancy Gonzalez Popped Positive For Cocaine Use

Prison officials not buying the 'lonely heart' story

Pregnant Guard, inmate Ronell Wilson
The female guard at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, arrested and charged last month with having sex with an inmate facing a death sentence has now admitted that she was taking illegal narcotics due to “stress,” according to her attorney.

Nancy Gonzalez tested positive for cocaine during her arraignment. Her lawyer told Brooklyn Federal magistrate, Judge James Orenstein that his client admits to taking the drug days prior to her arrest.

To add insult to injury, Gonzalez’ attorney, Anthony Ricco said the young woman relapsed and has a history of drug abuse. The 29-year-old former Army Soldier reportedly popped positive for drugs when the Federal Bureau of Prisons tested her in 2011.

Several people are now wondering how Gonzalez became a Federal guard in the first place and how she remained on the payroll although prison officials got a positive drug test on her prior to the investigation into the inmate-sex-scandal.

Believe me, no one is trying to add to her troubles,” said a source, “but she obviously wasn’t fit for duty and this should have been caught sooner than it was. I mean, inmates knew what she was doing.”

Gonzalez is reportedly eight-months pregnant with the child of prisoner Ronell Wilson. Media reports state the young guard allegedly had sexual relations with another inmate before he was transferred to a State prison. Officials have not released that inmate’s name.

An ABC News report appears to back up the statement of the unnamed source. At least three MDC inmates allegedly told authorities that Gonzalez was engaging in “inappropriate conduct” with Wilson. Their trysts reportedly took place inside Wilson’s cell and in a vacant room adjacent to Wilson’s cell while Gonzalez worked the night shift at MDC.

Court documents indicate that Gonzalez and Wilson had been sexually involved for a few months when she became pregnant in June. She also allegedly had a telephone conversation with Wilson's mother and arranged to meet her to show her sonogram pictures of her baby.

In one of the documents, Gonzalez purportedly said that she was “vulnerable” and “took a chance” because she wanted to “be loved.”

Officials don't appear to be buying the lonely heart story. They believe the former correctional officer and sneaky inmate hatched the baby plot with the intention of saving Wilson from a looming death sentence.

Pretty clever for what appears to be a not-so-bright Federal guard and an inmate who was described by Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis as suffering from a “significantly sub average mental functioning.” Garaufis’ finding also said that Wilson was not mentally retarded and could face the death penalty.

According to a Daily News article, FBI officials say Wilson wanted to kill the Federal prosecutor and even the widow of one of the officers he killed. So much for his mentally disabled argument.

In December 2006, Wilson was convicted of murdering two undercover New York City police officers, Rodney Andrews and James Nemorin in 2003. On January 30, 2007, Wilson, then 25, was sentenced to death.

Following some legal wrangling over prosecutorial errors the Second Circuit Court of Appeals vacated Wilson's death sentence and he was transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn from the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Wilson's attorneys are arguing that their client is mentally disabled and therefore not eligible for the death penalty based on the 2002 U.S. Supreme Court ruling outlawing the execution of mentally disabled offenders.

As for Gonzalez, she could face more than 10 years in prison if found guilty of her charges. She was arrested at her Huntington, New York home in February.
