On Wed, the Weinstein Company hosted a NYC premiere and after-party for the hit Australian film THE SAPPHIRES, based on the true story of the Australian Aboriginal 60s singing group of the same name. The cast – which includes actor Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) and Jessica Mauboy (2006 “Australian Idol” runner-up; has performed with Beyonce and for Oprah and President Obama) – along with director Wayne Blair
and writer Tony Briggs (whose mother was a member of the original
Sapphires) reunited on the red carpet at the Paris Theater. Guests and
VIPs danced the night away at the after-party at the Hudson Hotel.
THE SAPPHIRES opens in select NYC and LA theaters on March 22 and wider on March 29. Visit the film online at www.TheSapphires-Movie.com
ABOUT THE SAPPHIRES: Four
smart, gutsy young Australian Aboriginal women become unlikely stars in
the most unlikely of places, with the most unlikely of allies, in THE SAPPHIRES. Set in 1968, the film follows Gail (Deborah Mailman), Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Kay (Shari Sebbens)
as they seize a risky, but irresistible, chance to launch a
professional career singing for U.S. troops in Vietnam. Under the
tutelage of an R&B-loving Irish musician, Dave Lovelace (Chris O'Dowd),
the girls transform themselves into a sizzling soul act and set out to
make a name for themselves hundreds of miles from home. Inspired by a
true story, THE SAPPHIRES is a celebration of music, family and
self-discovery.
