Shelby County prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted a former Memphis police officer in the killing of a woman found shot to death inside her vehicle last September.
District Attorney Bill Gibbons said in a statement that 38-year-old Chancy Jones was indicted Tuesday for first-degree murder and employing a firearm during a felony. The body of 31-year-old Phyllis Malone was found Sept. 9 parked at a service station, and a medical examiner ruled that she died from multiple gunshot wounds. According to the affidavit, homicide detectives determined that Malone and Jones had been in a "troubled personal relationship," and Jones admitted to police that he shot and killed Malone. Jones is out of jail on a $200,000 bond and was fired by the police department.
