Starting at 8 p.m. at 489 Bergen Ave., the event is free but attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share for a potluck supper.

"It wasn't considered a replacement for Christmas or any holiday," Daoud-David Williams, former director of the library's Community Awareness Series, told The Jersey Journal earlier this week. "It's just the African-American community coming together to celebrate and to look at the history and contributions others have made over time. ...

"We pay homage to those who have struggled for our freedom in the past as well as in the present, and foster a sense of unity and the ability to work together."

In addition to the potluck supper, tonight's celebration will include the lighting of all seven Kwanzaa candles and a performance by Pamoja, an African drum and dance ensemble.

The holiday continues through Jan. 1.
