FBI: Former So. Carolina Sheriff Arrested, Sold Drugs From Police Issued SUV


The FBI says former Lee County, South Carolina, Sheriff E.J. Melvin was selling drugs from a police issued SUV while in office, then to add insult to injury, he would sell local drug dealers information he received concerning dealers within the city.

Agents claim Melvin was videotaped plotting to stop drug dealers during "routine traffic stops" where he then planned to steal some of the dealers cocaine for himself and turn the rest over to narcotics evidence.

The shamed Sheriff resigned from office the day he was arrested and the governor is prepared to appoint an interim sheriff.

Melvin and six others were charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms of powder cocaine and 50 grams or more of crack cocaine. If convicted of the charges, Melvin could face life in prison or as little as a minimum of 10 years in prison.
