A Jersey City police cruiser had a near-miss with a stolen limousine as the driver attempted to elude police near Greene Street and Washington Boulevard Saturday morning.
The driver, 20-year-old Mario Cruz, pinched the GMC Yukon SUV limousine from the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Jersey City around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Immediately after realizing his limo had been stolen, the chauffeur hailed a cab and took off after the thief. While following the limo thief, the A1 Airport Limousine Services chauffeur telephoned police who intercepted Cruz almost immediately.
As police honed in on the stolen SUV, Cruz attempted to ram the police car before heading north where he smacked a lamp post at Washignton Boulevard and 18th Street. The chase ended when Cruz crashed the limo into a building at the corner of 18th and Cole streets.
As pursuing officers pulled behind the stolen SUV limo, Cruz slammed the car into reverse and hit a police cruiser.
Cruz' pilferage cost him an injured wrist, a cut to his ear and a trip to the County Jail once released from the Jersey City Medical Center. While being treated for his injuries, Cruz told police he had been drinking and consented to a blood test.
If Cruz is found to have been driving under the influence, he could also be charged with driving while intoxicated.
