Emily Hawley, valedictorian of Centenary College graduating class, held the spotlight Saturday for three reasons: She was the smartest student in her class, she gave the final speech at the commencement ceremony...and she proposed to fellow graduate and high school sweetheart, Josh Walker.
Walker happily accepted.
Moments after finishing her speech, Hawley, who beat Walker out for the valedictorian designation, called her longtime love to the stage, then asked for his hand in marriage as guests and fellow graduates cheered her on.
Hawley and Walker, both of Maine, began dating during their sophomore year in high school and while Walker admitted to being "caught off guard" by the valedictorian's impromptu proposal, he said he didn't mind.
"We had talked about marriage," Hawley told the Daily Record of Parsippany, "and I had asked him if it was OK if I proposed."
Hawley, who managed a perfect 4.0 GPA and graduated with a bachelor's degree in equine sciences said her parents were "shocked" by her proposal.
"I think I saw one of my aunts leap out of her chair, so I'm assuming they were surprised," said Walker, a history major with a teaching certificate, maintained a 3.999 GPA throughout college and added that his family was happy with the day's events.
The graduate lovebirds have yet to set a date for their nuptials, but do know that they plan to live in New Jersey.
