Bobby Gonzalez, the former basketball coach of Seaton Hall, appeared in a Newark court Wednesday to face criminal mischief and shoplifting charges charge stemming from a trip to the Short Hills mall in June, the New Jersey Newsroom reported.

Gonzalez, 47, was accused of stealing a Polo Ralph Lauren satchel, valued at $1,395 by removing the sensor tag attached to it and walking out of the store with the item, which was later found at another store in the mall, Joe's American Bar and Grill where Gonzalez allegedly left it with a hostess.

According to NorthJersey.com, a hostess at the restaurant returned the satchel to the Ralph Lauren store manager, who notified Millburn police. An investigation followed the complaint and after identifying Gonzalez, police issued an arrest warrant for the former Manhattan College coach.

Gonzalez, of Binghampton, New York, turned himself in to Millburn authorities on July 5. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday. If he is convicted of the shoplifting charge, he could face up to five years in jail. Gonzalez, who was fired from Seton in March, has since filed a lawsuit against the school over his termination.
