Police have yet to identify the man killed by a Hoboken bound train on the Bergen County line in East Rutherford Wednesday. New Jersey Transit says the victim was struck sometime after 11 a.m. as he walked along the train tracks, 1010wins.com reported.
Dan Stessel, a NJ Transit spokesman said the engineer repeatedly sounded the trains warning horn, but the man did not move. The engineer applied the train's emergency braking system, but could not avoid hitting the victim.
There were 89 passengers and crew aboard and no injuries were reported. All passengers were transported to another train.
In a separate accident, another man was killed after he jumped in front of an eastbound Long Island Railroad train around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. In an ironic twist, when police went to the man's East Northport home to notify his next of kin, they found two dead bodies.
Service on the LIRR's Port Jefferson line was suspended for two hours after the suicide. Officials have not released any further information on the bodies found in the Maxwell home or on Maxwell at press time.
