Three days after arriving in Afghanistan, Army Specialist Pedro A. Millet Meletiche died from injuries he sustained as he and members of his unit were on a patrol in the war torn nation.

Meletiche, 20, enlisted in the Army shortly after his graduation from Elizabeth High School in 2008.
The New Jersey native died Aug. 22 near Arghandab River Valley when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. There were no other injuries or deaths reported in connection with the attack for the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, which is based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

Meletiche's family told NJ.COM that they spoke to the young soldier on Friday, his first day in country, and he told them that his unit was sweeping for mines. Millet's body was flown into Dover Air Force Base Tuesday for his funeral.
