Suffolk County police are investigating the theft of human remains from a Long Island mausoleum Tuesday, 1010wins.com reported.
Officials say morbid thieves broke into the St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale between 6:30 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday by jumping a fence and removing the body of a woman who died 12 years ago from her crypt.
One mourner at the cemetery told 1010wins.com that she thought the theft was a "horrible" thing.
A spokesman for the cemetery, which is run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, said the families connected to the three mausoleums have been notified and added that “It is incomprehensible that anyone would violate the sacred resting place of those that have passed from this world to eternal life.”
