Apparently 24-year-old music entertainer Mario, whose real name is Mario Dewar Barrett, wasn't singing "Let Me Love You" last week when he allegedly assaulted his mother, The New York Daily News reported.
.
The reported that Shawntia Hardaway, told Baltimore police Mario began yelling at her then used his hands and forearms to push her in the chest and shoulder area causing minor pain and discomfort.

When police arrived to the home, Hardaway was sitting in the lobby, while Mario remained in the apartment.

Hassan Murphy III, Mario's attorney called the incident an "unfortunate" altercation between a son who cares for his mother who happens to be struggling with a serious drug addiction.

Murphy told CNN that Mario's mother continues "to struggle with a devastating addiction" and the alleged physical confrontation between the two revolved around her drug use, CBS News reported.

"Anyone who has waged the battle to save loved ones from the forces of drugs knows the irrational behavior that almost always accompanies their actions," said Murphy.

Hardaway allegedly stated that this was not the first time her son assaulted her. The tumultuous relationship between mother and son stems from Hardaway's heroin addiction, which can be seen in the 2007 MTV documentary, "I Won’t Love You To Death."

Though Hardaway struggled with drug addiction throughout Mario's childhood, she managed to support his love of music and bought him a karaoke machine. In high school, a young Mario joined a musical group that featured the oldest son of comedienne Mo'nique.

Mario captured the attention of music producer Troy Patterson, after singing "I'll Make Love to You" at a Coppin State College talent show and was later offered a record deal with Clive Davis' J Records. He was 14-years-old.

The Baltimore County, Maryland native credits the likes of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, Boyz II Men, and Usher as his musical inspirations. Mario, sang a captivating performance of the Stevie Wonder classic "You and I" at Clive's Grammy party in 2002, is the winner of two Billboard music awards.

Mario, who was arrested and charged with second degree assault, posted a $50,000 bond and was released.
