Bronx Principal Under Investigation For Using School as Baby-Sitting Site

Avon Connell-Cowell, principal at P.S. 382 in the Bronx is under internal investigation by the city Department of Education for allegedly hiring a relative and using the school according to officials, as a baby-sitting service for her nephew.

Teachers at P.S. 382 say Connell-Cowell's sister, Krystle Connell has been employed as a family worker at PS 386, which shares a building with PS 382, since December 2009, but in truth, they say Connell works as a secretary in PS 382.

Apparently both school swap staff members on their payroll documents in an effort to avoid the appearance of nepotism. Teachers told the NY Post that on staff-only days, Connell baby-sits her niece and nephew in the main office, where the boy has been seen sleeping under a desk.

A source told the NY Post that Connell-Cowell "used the school as her own personal playground."
"If anyone else would have brought their underage kid to work, they would have been fired."

Teachers said Connell-Cowell had been using first-grade and kindergarten classrooms as baby-sitting spots since June for her 3-year-old nephew along with his sister, a second-grader at Fordham Heights elementary school. The teachers added that the baby-sitting had been going on for about 10 weeks and the niece commuted with the Principal's sister from outside the school district.

One teacher told NY Post reporters that she saw another teacher "carrying around a bag of toys and things that belong to the child. By the end of last school year, they were actually bringing him to school in a school uniform," the unidentified teacher said.

Connell-Cowell, the founding Principal of the Elementary School for Math, Science, and Technology, referred questions about the allegations to the DOE press office.
P.S. 382 falls under Community School District 10.
