NYTIMES: As Storm Winds Down, Travel Network Stays Crippled

AP:O'Brien, NJ mayor turn facetious feud into comedy

By VICTOR EPSTEIN Associated Press Writer

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Conan O'Brien and Newark Mayor Cory Booker turned their frivolous feud about the gritty city into comedy on NBC's "Tonight Show" on Friday.

The chatty 40-somethings worked off one another like a comic duo. But the jokes eventually gave way to a plug for Booker's efforts to fashion a national blueprint for urban transformation in Newark, long an icon for urban decay, and a $100,000 donation to his Newark Now charity from O'Brien and NBC.

Booker's appearance on O'Brien's show culminated a facetious feud that began Sept. 23 with O'Brien joking that Booker's new health care program consisted of a bus ticket out of Newark, which is just west of New York City and is often scarred by violence. The mayor responded with a humorous video on YouTube in which he banned O'Brien from Newark Liberty International Airport.

AP: N.J. man killed in North Carolina home invasion

By The Associated Press
October 03, 2009, 12:44PM

HALIFAX, N.C. -- Authorities say a New Jersey man has been killed after he forced his way into a North Carolina man's home.

Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier told WRAL-TV that 61-year-old Carlton Burgess, of Lumberton, N.J., was shot in the chest Friday morning.

Investigators said Burgess knocked on Marcel Alston's door in Halifax, then forced his way inside and began beating the homeowner.

Authorities said Alston was shot in the buttocks as he ran up the stairs, but managed to get his own gun out of his bedroom and shoot Burgess.

Frazier said Alston told police he and Burgess have a long-running dispute, but he hadn't seen the other man in several years.

The sheriff says the killing appears to be self-defense, but prosecutors will decide if charges are filed.

EAST ORANGE -- Police arrested a Newark man Thursday suspected of shooting at five people standing on an East Orange porch and wounding a bystander, police said.

East Orange Sgt. Andrew Di Elmo said that at 11:30 p.m. Monday, police were alerted to gunshots near 136 Bedford St. A 15-year-old girl who lived there told police that she was on the porch with four people when three other men, whom she knew, came over and engaged in a verbal dispute with her.

Exclusive Video Interview!! Mayor Wayne Smith of Irvington,NJ addresses his critics from the state of NJ Part 1

Biographical Sketch of Wayne Smith, Mayor
Township of Irvington, New Jersey
Promoting an aggressive agenda for the rebirth of the Township of Irvington, Wayne Smith was elected as the 20 th Mayor of the municipality in May 2002. His entire slate of council candidates—known as Team Irvington—was also elected, sealing the mandate for his leadership.

Mayor Smith’s tenure has been characterized by bold, innovative leadership that has yielded significant progress for the Township of Irvington. His most noted accomplishments are: initiating the formation of the Anti-Crime Partnership that includes the NJ State Police, local, county and federal agencies; securing the $4.4 million agreement to rebuild the Irvington Bus Terminal, which opened in April 2005; demolishing dozens of dilapidated, abandoned properties to pave the way for redevelopment; and drastically increasing code enforcement that has resulted in about $1.5 million in fines of neglectful property owners. His outstanding stewardship has not only delivered tangible results but high hopes for the future revitalization of Irvington.

In a nod to his undeniable popularity and the affirmation of the advancement of the Township of Irvington, Mayor Smith ran unopposed for a second term in May 2006 and assumed office in July 2006. He is the first chief executive of Irvington to accomplish the feat since Mayor Robert H. Miller in 1978. In November 2006, Mayor Smith was installed as the president and chairman of the 24-member NJ Urban Mayors' Association.

NJ news: Gov. Corzine to give NJ schools help in form of stimulus aid

Dozens of Schools to Benefit From Funds in Corzine Budget
By JOHN MOONEY
Piscataway
nytimes.com
WHEN Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed a new school financing law for New Jersey last year, the school district here was just the kind the new formula was meant to help.

With its high property taxes and relatively low spending for schools, the Middlesex County district, situated on the edge of Rutgers University, won a 20 percent boost in state aid, or about $2.7 million.

“We brought down property taxes, while able to hold down class sizes,” said Robert Copeland, the district’s superintendent. "It stopped us from having to cut programs.”

A year later, all the economic rules have changed, especially after last week, when Mr. Corzine presented his austere $28.9 billion state budget plan for next year. School officials throughout the state have been worried that any gains from last year could prove fleeting in the next.

Over all, Mr. Corzine’s budget will make almost no one happy, especially many homeowners who will not be able to deduct property taxes on state income tax returns for at least a year. But schools have been spared the worst cuts, and indeed dozens of public school districts will benefit from Mr. Corzine’s proposal, including Piscataway.

NJ NEWS: Entire NJ family killed in Buffalo plane crash

N.J. family killed in Buffalo plane crash remembered
by Nyier Abdou and Brian T. Murray/ The Star-Ledger
Saturday February 28, 2009, 9:18 PM

More than 1,500 people gathered at the Jersey City Assembly Hall of Jehovah's earlier tonight to remember a Bloomfield family killed two weeks ago when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed in a Buffalo, N.Y. suburb, killing all 49 people aboard and one man on the ground.

Donald and Dawn Mossop, their 12-year-old son, Shawn, and Dawn Mossop's 44-year-old sister, Ferris Reid, were remembered as an inseparable, loving family who relished traveling together, eating well together and worshipping together at their Jehovah's Witness congregation in Montclair.

NJ NEWS: PRUDENTIAL ARENA DONE..WHAT'S NEXT FOR NEWARK?

Redevelopment Lagging Near Newark’s Arena
By MARY JO PATTERSON

NEWARK

THE glass entrance towers flanking the glossy Prudential Center downtown were bathed in light as members of the city’s business community streamed inside one morning last month, eager to tour the place and hear about developers’ efforts to transform the neighborhood.

“You can really feel the difference,” Barbara E. Kauffman, executive vice president of the Newark Regional Business Partnership, said in the hockey-themed arena’s Bud Light Goal Bar, a premium seating area. “Things are happening, and starting to pop.”

Yet the view from the Prudential Center’s glass towers did not suggest much action at all.

In one direction, surface parking stretched as far as the eye could see, with nary a new high-rise in sight. A hulking century-old warehouse loomed at the site of a proposed pedestrian walkway, its demolition frozen by a lawsuit. In another direction stood a snazzy new sports bar and steakhouse, the Brick City Bar and Grill, but it was the only player on an otherwise deserted block.

NJ WOMAN BEATEN AND LEFT IN THE COLD BY EX-GIRLFRIENDS??!

NJ police: Woman's ex-friends used cold as weapon
By VICTOR EPSTEIN, Associated Press Writer Victor Epstein, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 1 min ago
NORTH BERGEN, N.J. – A 19-year-old woman who thought she was going to a party was instead driven to a rural wooded area and abandoned in 8-degree weather in a long-planned attack by three friends angry with her over an insurance claim, police said Thursday.
The victim was wearing only a dress and one shoe, having lost the other in a struggle as she was dragged from the car, said Lt. Frank Cannella of the North Bergen police. A motorist soon stopped and let the victim use a cell phone but refused to give her a lift.
The victim used the phone to call one of the women who abandoned her, Cannella said. She spent more than an hour in the freezing cold before flagging down another motorist, who took her to a hospital, he said.
