The object of her...deadly intention has been dead for almost three years. The man she once idolized has been in prison since the late 1960's. She was convicted, escape prison, was found and re-incarcerated. Now, she's about to be paroled.
Per the Federal Bureau of Prisons,Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, former Manson family follower, will step foot outside of the walls of the Federal Medical Center Prison in Carswell, texas for the first time in 35 years on August 16th.
Frome, now age 60, was convicted of attempting to assassinate U.S. President Gerald Ford in 1975. Frome was one of Charles Manson's followers. Charles Manson was a cult leader who was convicted of conspiracy to commit the Tate/LaBianca murders and was sentenced to death. With the abolishment of the death penalty in California, Manson's sentenced was later reduced to life in prison. He is serving his sentence at the Corcoran State Prison.
In 1975 Fromme was convicted of pointing a gun at then-President Gerald Ford in Sacramento, California. Secret Service agents prevented her from firing, but the gun was later found to have no bullet in the chamber, although it contained a clip of ammunition.
Fromme became eligible for parole in 1985, but for years, she waived her right to a parole hearing. The Bureau of Prisons would not say whether she changed her mind and requested a hearing, but the U.S. Parole Commission's Web site says that everyone who wishes to be considered for parole, except those committed under juvenile delinquency procedures, must complete a parole application.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmates serving life are generally paroled after 30 years, unless the parole commission decides to block the release.
Fromme was not granted parole until July 2008, but was not released then because of extra time added to her sentence for a 1987 escape from the West Virginia prison she was being held at. The escape occured after a 1987 interview with CNN affiliate WCHS. She was found two days later, only a few miles from the prison. Rumor had it that Frome escape prison because she heard that her idol, Charles Manson, was ill.
During that 1987 interview, Frome recalled the president "had his hands out and was waving ... and he looked like cardboard to me. But at the same time, I had ejected the bullet in my apartment and I used the gun as it was."
No word yet as to where Frome will live upon her release.
