Father Who Shot 15-Year-Old Son Held Without Bail

Residents within the Highland Park community built a memorial at the shooting site where a 15-year-old boy was shot by his father. The memorial site bore stuffed animals, candles and teddy bears embroidered with, "I love you."

Jamar Pinkney Sr., 37, received a phone call from his wife stating that their son, 15-year-old Jamar Pinkney Jr., had told her that he had improper sexual contact with a 3-year-old child.

The elder Pinkney arrived home, irate. At gunpoint, he ordered his son to strip then marched him to a vacant lot and shot him to death despite pleas from the boy and his mother, a relative said.

Michigan authorities filed a first-degree murder charge Wednesday against Pinkney Sr., for the Monday night shooting which occured in a vacant lot in the Highland Park community.

At Pickney's first court appearence Judge Brigette Officer entered a not guilty plea for Pinkney, who is also charged with assault, and ordered him jailed without bond until a preliminary examination Dec. 1.

Defense attorney Corbett O’Meara said prosecutors should consider evidence of the father’s state of mind over the sex abuse report. “If something were to happen that would cause a reasonable person to lose control of himself, that is something the prosecution would have to take into account,” O’Meara said outside Highland Park District Court.

“This is something that’s hard to deal with for all the parties concerned, including the police,” said police Chief Ted Caldwell. “Highland Park is a small city. These are people who have been members of the community for years.”

Caldwell added that the sexual misconduct allegation that led to the murder was not a part of their current investigation.
