BET's Being Mary Jane

By: Jas

Last night, Gabrielle Union wowed us as dynamic Mary Jane Paul in BET’s “Being Mary Jane”.

From the producers of BET’s “The Game” and Number 1 box office comedy “Jumping the Broom”, “Being Mary Jane” aired tonight as an original movie and will continue next year as a BET series.
Mary Jane Paul is a successful TV news anchor fights to balance work, family, and love and in an hour and thirty minutes, MJ represents several real-life scenarios of today’s African-American woman.

Mary Jane represents the black woman stereotype’s of sapphire, jezebel, and independent; but on the other hand shows passion and social responsibility with her eagerness to produce the story “Black Girl’s Aren’t Ugly, They’re Invisible” and her commitment to taking care of her family.
The opening credits noted, “42% of black women never been married… This is one black women’s story…not to represent all black women,” and the anticipation of what was next heightened. As the plot   developed we realized everything was in place for MJ other than her desire to find love and have a child. And after an interesting interview she has with a guest on her news show, she plots to make her desires come true.

But viewer’s are only at the climax of the story and have to wait until the series to see how MJ’s life unfolds.

Bravo BET!

“Being Mary Jane” will re-air Wednesday, July 3 at 9 p.m. EST and the series will begin January 2014.
