I had the opportunity to interview
Marques Houston yesterday, and let me be the first to say I was far from
yelling, “go home Roger”. Houston dished about his new single, “Give Your Love
a Try” featuring Problems, and his 6th Solo Album, Famous. I even asked him about the
special lady in his life! Check out our interview below!
TBUT: We saw you at the BET Awards Charity
events this past weekend, tell us about the celebrity basketball game and about
the charity.
Marques Houston: It went really,
really great, I hosted a dance battle event for domestic violence and that went
really well. The winning crew got $2500. That was pretty cool, the basketball
game went really well also, I tried to, ya know win, but our team was—short (laughs).
But that went great I got to see a lot of my good homies, Tyga, Chris Brown,
Tank, a lot of good friends of mine, we had to play against each other but it
was cool.
TBUT: So tell us about your new album!
MH: Well the new album will be release
August 27th and I’m really excited about it, it’s called FAMOUS. It’s
my 6th solo studio album. I took a break from the music industry for
a minute to do my thing as far as an executive producer. I executive produced
two films that came out, Battlefield America; somebody helped me to start my
own film/television production company. So I’ve been doing behind the scenes
work, but my twitter and my instagram were blowing up, my fans were like we gotta
hear some new music from you, you gotta give us something new we miss you out
there. SO I was like you know what, let me not disappoint my fans, so I got
back in the studio to ensure that I don’t disappoint.
So
I got back in the studio and released a viral single, “Speechless”, which people really really liked, so we finished the
album and now we have the first single, featuring Problems, called “Give your
love a try”, a lot of people love it and I’m excited about the album. We doing
it!
TBUT: What inspired the single, “Give
Your Love a Try”?
MH: The inspiration came from real life situations,
it’s about a guy who’s used to running about doing his thing being a player, ya
know, and not really taking love to seriously, but it’s this one girl that’s been
there, that’s been in front of him, she’s feeling him, he’s feeling her, and he
finally makes a decision and is like you know what, I’m gonna slow down, I been
running out there a lot and that aint working so I’m gonna slow down and give
your love a try. I know a lot of people can relate to that.
TBUT: With this being your
sixth album, how has your sound evolved?
MH: It’s definitely a lot more mature, it’s
got that Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Prince, jam session vibe. Real mellow, but live instruments.
I’ve matured as an artist and I’ve matured as a person and I think it really
showcases in the music.
With
this album, I didn’t want to do a feature on every song, shout out to Problems
for being featured on the first single, I really appreciated that. But I want
the music to speak for itself, I can appreciate artist that loved to do real
music, so I wanted to make an album that people could appreciate and listen to
and not be about being a gimmick, and who you got one the song. It’s more about
I really like that song—I really like this album I want to listen to it. That’s
what this album is about for me, taking the time and really making some great
music that feel like my fans will love.
TBUT: You’ve grown a lot since being
Roger from next door; tell us about your new film, The Love Letter.
MH: The
Love Letter is
a film for the UP Network, I just finished shooting with Keshia Knight Pulliam,
Lil Romeo, Jackee. I had a great time, we went to Wilmington, NC to shoot and it’s
a romantic comedy, something I’ve always wanted to do. To be a part of that with
such an outstanding cast was such a great mission for me, it was a great
accomplishment for my career, growing from doing Sister Sister, the dance movies, like You Got Served & Battlefield America, and the movies like
The Somebody Help Me Series, and the things that I’ve done
in my past, Ya know, to be able to branch out and do something different, I
think that was a good thing for me to do. I was kind of nervous, you know, I wasn’t
used to doing movies without my “Team”. I think it was a great experience for
me and I enjoyed myself.
