Sigma Gamma Rho Initiate Speaks Out About Nightly Beatings

When the lights went down, the paddles came out.

Six members of Sigma Gamma Rho at Rutgers University -- an 88-year-old national Greek organization -- allegedly subjected one pledge to nightly beating for eight days, authorities say.

Beginning Jan. 18, the hapless initiate was denied food and slapped on the buttocks with a wooden paddle in a cruel rite designed to "humble" her.

The victim's rear end became so bloody and wounded that she had to be hospitalized. Six students have been charged.

News of the sick ritual hit a raw nerve at the college's New Brunswick, NJ, campus yesterday.

"We asked about this at orientation and were told that doesn't happen here," said freshman Souad Haddara, 18. "They told us it was completely safe, that . . . hazing was against the law, and . . . if it did happen, they would deal with it."

Relatives of one of the accused sorority sisters -- Llana Warner, 20, of The Bronx -- said they couldn't believe the allegations.

"That's not within her character," said her dad, who declined to give his name.
