Easter Blessings From The Black Urban Times

It's a little after 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning and millions of us are up -- or getting up -- to attend Sunday Mass in observance of Easter. Churches will perform re-enactments of Jesus' walk to his crucifixion.

When I was a girl, I attended St. Rita's Church in the Bronx, New York. More than half of my neighborhood was Roman Catholic so many of us looked forward to watching and/or participating in the Good Friday procession.

It's a huge deal for us Catholics and no church (OK, OK, I'm biased on this one) did it better than St. Rita's.

Father Stanley and the nuns spent months preparing us for it and we loved it. The photo above was taken by Clarisel, a fellow Boricua y Bronxnite, of the parishioner's participating in the Good Friday procession at St. Rita's Church.

At the Vatican Saturday, The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI led the annual Easter vigil at St. Peter's Basilica, a tradition within the Catholic faith. It was encouraging.

Later today, hundreds of thousands will flock to the Vatican City and stand within St. Peters Square to listen to the Pontiff as he delivers words of hope and change in the spirit of this Holy season.

For those of you unable to make it to Church, I hope you are able to watch services or Mass on television.

One of my most beloved passages from the Bible is John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life"

I extend my sincerest blessings to each and all for a wonderful Easter Sunday.

May God bestow upon you and your families his abundant blessings and love.
