New Jersey's New License Plates to Begin with A10

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has run out of letters for your plates. The old alphabetical format began with three letters, well, when the MVC reached ZZZ 99Z, they knew it was time to come up with a new alphabetical sequence so they've begun making license plates that will begin with one letter and two numbers, followed by three letters. A10 AAA will now follow the ZZZ.

This new sequence will be used for the next twenty years for approximately 25 million vehicles. Some motor vehicle agencies have already received a fresh batch of new plates beginning with A10.

In 1967, the Motor Vehicles Commission began the three letters, three numbers sequence (AAA 100 - ZZZ 999). Then in 1974, the agency reversed the pattern to begin with three numbers followed by three letters (100 AAA - 999 ZZZ).

Since then, New Jersey has used a variety of combination on either side of the image of New Jersey.

In 1992, the new combination drew complaints from motorists and police alike as the state crammed seven digits onto plates making it difficult for law enforcement to read. The state gave the seven-digit plates, which are manufactured at Bayside State Prison's auto-tag shop in Leesburg, the boot a year later.

The state has been using the current goldfinch yellow (the state bird) reflectorized plates since 1992. From 1908 through 1951, the state of New Jersey's license plate color scheme changed yearly. The first New Jersey state license plates bore a black background with cream letters and were made in 1908, according to the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association.

In 1952, the agency unveiled license plates with a black background and orange letters. That color scheme lasted until 1959, when the state introduced plates with a straw-colored background and black letters. From 1979 to 1992, the colors were changed to a blue background and buff letters.
