Relationships and Independence: Can You Have Both?


Marriage and independence...are the two mutually exclusive?

Some women are quick to boast about being independent; bragging about how they don't need anybody for anything because they're doing it "all" for themselves.

Popular songs like Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," which was supposed to be an anthem to female empowerment, helped foster this fad.

"Irreplaceable" is a song about a woman who learns her man is cheating on her. He's driving another chick around in the car she bought for him, so she's giving him the boot. She reminds him it's her name on that 2007 Jaguar XK as she offers to call him a cab.

The lyrics were meant to serve as a tool of empowerment for women who were asserting their independence by breaking up with sorry boyfriends.

Bill Lamb of About said that the female empowerment theme of "Irreplaceable" bore similarities to the concept of Terry McMillan's 1995 novel, Waiting to Exhale.

I had to scratch my head on that one. I didn't share that analogy of Waiting to Exhale, but that another article.

Let's ponder for a moment, the analogy of female empowerment and independence in relationships. Both are wonderful things, but in this day and age, I think people tend to confuse misguided rhetoric for female empowerment and independence with interdependence.
