An Ocean County grand jury handed up an 18-count indictment against a former Jackson firefighter who has been accused of sexually assaulting four children under the age of 12. The sexual assaults are alleged to have occurred sometime last year.
The former veteran firefighter of Fire District 4 in Jackson offered his resignation from the Board of Fire Commissioners shortly after he was arrested from his cell at the Ocean County Jail, said board attorney, Joseph D. Youssouf.
The indictment charges John W. Ackley, 43, of Andover Road, Jackson, with various counts of aggravated sexual assaults, endangering the welfare of the children and sexual assaults on the four children — a 4-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy.
The indictment, which also charges Ackley with possession of child pornography that was discovered on his computer following his arrest in November, alleges that Ackley performed sexual acts on the 4-year-old and 8-year-old girls, and that he instructed the two 4-year-olds to perform oral sex on each other in his presence. The indictment also alleges that Ackley molested the 12-year-old boy and masturbated in front of him.
Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Laura N. Pierro, who told the APP.com that Ackley did not meet the victims through his job as a firefighter, said that investigators were made aware of Ackley's sordid crimes after the two youngest children began behaving inappropriately, and the 4-year-old boy told his mother what was happening.
"It's a complex case," said Ackley's attorney, S. Karl Mohel. "We're reviewing our options."
Ackley is charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual assault, each carrying potential prison terms up to 20 years; three counts of sexual assault, each carrying potential prison terms up to 10 years; four counts of child endangerment, each carrying potential prison terms up to 10 years; and one count of possessing child pornography, carrying a potential prison term up to 18 months. He is free on a $200,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned on the charges within the next several weeks.
