Descended from Ethiopian Royalty, Singer’s Debut is a Killer

Universal Music Group releases the debut single by Sheba Sahlemariam “Love this Lifetime” featuring Bounty Killer

New York, NY – A relative of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, Singer/Songwriter/Producer Sheba Sahlemariam makes her worldwide musical debut with the release of her first single “Love this Lifetime” featuring Bounty Killer. Distributed digitally by Universal Music Group, the single will be available worldwide today, Tuesday September 15, 2009.

While she serves up an edgy brew of Urban, Reggae/Dancehall and African music, Ethiopian born Sheba Sahlemariam calls Reggae music, the spiritual music of Rastafarianism, the glue to her eclectic recipe for her brand of global urban fusion. The serendipitous circumstances that led her family to live in Jamaica, make her connection to Haile Selassie especially significant as he is the most highly regarded religious symbol among Rastafarians and Reggae is the gospel music of the faith. "It's an honor to wave the flag for Rasta, Reggae, Ethiopia, the Lion of Judah... Caribbean music is the first music I heard as a child, and the first music I fell for. It's a chance to bridge between Reggae and Africa in a way that speaks right to my heart."

Sheba Sahlemariam emerged on the scene after her newly recorded song “Love This Lifetime” was spontaneously posted on Youtube and became an instant hit. Within hours, she began receiving requests to send the song to DJ's worldwide. Still unfamiliar with Sheba as an artist, many respectable DJ’s (such as David Rodigan of KISS 100FM in London) put “Love This Lifetime” into their rotations. The popularity of the song inspired Sheba to make it into an official single. She then went back into the studio with infamous dancehall Reggae veteran and superstar, Bounty Killer and remixed “Love This Lifetime” to be released on her forthcoming album ‘The Lion of Sheba’. “Working with Bounty Killer on this Remix was amazing. Few artists can match his natural charisma and energy. What I love most about this record is that it showcases a side of Bounty Killer that is rarely seen: the “War Lord” is a lover too. Anyone that admires his hard-core persona can appreciate that because even the most hardcore dudes fall in love”, said Sheba.

Never having pursued a record deal, Sheba formed her own label, (S)onic Dynasty. Sheba explains, “A few weeks after it went up, it charted on urban radio in London. It also got a lot of spins and press in Ethiopia, and spins in Jamaica. I wanted to maximize on the moment and not wait around for someone to sign me, so we had to figure out how to start promoting it. That led to the Bounty Killer Remix. The fact that Universal Music Group stepped in to distribute the single globally was not something I expected, but now that it's happening I'm realizing that we have a unique opportunity. The internet is allowing us to connect the dots to fans around the world in an unconventional way. The ‘Lion of Sheba’ has been done for a while but I'm writing and recording new tracks all the time, so there is a lot of material coming down the pike. I'm still open to signing with a label, that's always been a part of my dream, but there are so many ways to create fans now that there is no reason not to just go ahead and put out music in the hopes of attracting the right partners.”

Sheba is currently in Jamaica shooting the video for “Love this Lifetime” featuring Bounty Killer with the biggest director in the Reggae/Dancehall market, Jay Will "GAME OVER", who has directed videos for some of the top Reggae artists including Shaggy, Jah Cure, Junior Reid, Mr. Vegas, Beenie Man, M.I.A. and Sean Paul. Many of his previous videos have been placed in major rotation on MTV and BET. Jay Will has won several awards for his work including CVM TV Director of the Year Award in 2006, Best Documentary Award at The Flashpoint Film Festival in 2006 for his riveting portrayal of Jamaica's pulsating Dancehall culture, Video Director of the Year EME Awards 2008, Best Dancehall Video Reggae Academy Awards 2008, Best Music Video IRMWA Awards 2008 and in 2008 The Jamaican Observer named him one of “The 20 Most Influential Persons/Entities In Reggae and Dancehall Music”.

Promo Only, the nation’s largest provider of promotional content is featuring “Love this Lifetime” on their Caribbean Series September 2009 CD alongside some of the biggest names in Reggae, Reggaeton and Urban music including John Legend, Estelle, Wyclef Jean, Serani, Daddy Yankee, Sean Paul and Buju Banton Promo Only CD’s are distributed nationally to professional DJ’s, radio stations, music industry executives and entertainment venues.

Sheba Sahlemariam’s debut single “Love this Lifetime” featuring Bounty Killer will be available on iTunes worldwide on Tuesday September 15, 2009.

On Saturday October 3, 2009, New African Productions presents Sheba Sahlemariam in her first headlining performance at the famed Joe’s Pub in New York City. Tickets and additional information can be found at:

About Sheba Sahlemariam:
A refugee from the majestic war-torn land of Ethiopia, Sheba Sahlemariam was reared among the concrete jungles of New York City, Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. Named after the Queen of Sheba, famed empress of Ethiopia, to whom her family traces direct ancestry, Sheba is a cousin to Emperor Haile Selassie, which highlights the serendipitous circumstances that moved her family from Ethiopia to Guyana, where she spent her early childhood and later, Jamaica, which deepened her connection to Reggae and Dancehall, the glue to her global and urban sound. Sheba stirs up a unique musical brew that is a mélange of Reggae grooves, Afro-beat, Ethiopian traditional music and jazz, R&B riffs, 16 bar rhymes, and Dancehall Sing-Jaying --souvenirs from her nomadic life. Sheba’s gorgeous four octave range, soul stirring, provocative lyrics and fierce ability to dial up a diversity of musical styles puts her at the razor’s edge and will expel you from preconceived definitions of urban, pop and world music. Introducing Sheba Sahlemariam, the little lion with the big voice.

AP: Nearly 170 killed in Iran plane crash

Nearly 170 killed in Iran plane crash
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer Ali Akbar Dareini, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 28 mins ago

TEHRAN, Iran – A Russian-made Iranian passenger plane carrying nearly 170 people crashed shortly after takeoff Wednesday, smashing into a field northwest of the capital and shattering to pieces. State television said all on board were killed.

The plane's tail burst into flames in the air and the aircraft circled as if looking for a place to land before it crashed, an unidentified witness told the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The impact gouged a deep trench in the dirt field, which was littered with smoking wreckage and body parts, according to photos from the scene. Footage aired on state TV showed a large chunk of a wing, but much of the wreckage appeared to be in small shreds, and emergency workers and witnesses picked around the shredded metal for bodies and flight data recorders to determine the cause of the crash.

AP: Iran has a missle that can hit Israel

Iran tests missile with range that can hit Israel
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer Ali Akbar Dareini, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 3 mins ago

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran tested its longest-range, solid-fuel missile yet Wednesday — a launch that displayed Tehran's reach and burnished the president's hardline reputation ahead of next month's election.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates confirmed the test, which was announced by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The launch raised concerns about the sophistication of Tehran's missile program and Pentagon officials cautioned that it leaves Iran at a crossroads.

"They can either continue on this path of continued destabilization in the region or they can decide that they want to pursue relationships with the countries in the region and the United States that are more normalized," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman.

Solid-propellent rockets are a concern because they can be fueled in advance and moved or hidden in silos, said a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss technical details of Iran's missile program.

Israel said the test appeared to be in part Iran's response to a positive meeting on Monday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Barack Obama. Following the meeting, Obama threatened Iran with further international sanctions if it does not agree to reopen negotiations on its nuclear program.

AP: Mexico says flu ebbing, lowers alert level

MEXICO CITY – Mexican officials lowered their swine flu alert level in the capital on Monday and said they will allow universities, cafes, museums and libraries to reopen this week, even as the number of confirmed cases topped 1,200 worldwide.

Mexican officials declared the epidemic to be waning at its epicenter, announcing that Wednesday will conclude a five-day closure of nonessential businesses they credit for reducing the spread of the new virus.

President Felipe Calderon said that higher education classes would resume Thursday and all other schools and government-run day care centers would reopen by May 11.

Global health officials urged countries to remain vigilant because the outbreak's spread around the world remains in its early stages, but there were no imminent plans to raise the pandemic alert level.

Raising the alert level to 6, the highest, would mean that a global outbreak of swine flu is under way. The World Health Organization uses the term pandemic to refer to geographic spread rather than severity. Pandemics aren't necessarily deadly. The past two pandemics — in 1957 and 1968 — were relatively mild.

"We do not know how long we will have until we move to Phase 6," said Margaret Chan, head of the WHO. "We are not there yet. The criteria will be met when we see in another region outside North America, showing very clear evidence of community-level transmission."

AP: Somali pirates on hijack spree since weekend

Somali pirates on hijack spree since weekend
By ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer Elizabeth A. Kennedy, Associated Press Writer 45 mins ago

MOMBASA, Kenya – Somali pirates were back to business as usual Tuesday, defiantly seizing four more ships with 60 hostages after U.S. sharpshooters rescued an American freighter captain. "No one can deter us," one bandit boasted. The freed skipper, Richard Phillips, will return home to the United States on Wednesday, after reuniting with his 19-man crew in the Kenyan port of Mombasa, according to the shipping company Maersk Line Ltd.

The brigands grabbed more ships and hostages to show they would not be intimidated by President Barack Obama's pledge to confront the high-seas bandits, according to a pirate based in the Somali coastal town of Harardhere.

"Our latest hijackings are meant to show that no one can deter us from protecting our waters from the enemy because we believe in dying for our land," Omar Dahir Idle told The Associated Press by telephone. "Our guns do not fire water. I am sure we will avenge."

On Monday, Obama vowed to "halt the rise of piracy" without saying exactly how the U.S. and allies would do it.

The pirates have vowed vengeance for five colleagues slain by U.S. and French forces in two hostage rescues since Friday.

"The recent American operation, French navy attack on our colleagues or any other operation mean nothing to us," said Idle, 26, whose gang holds a German freighter with 24 hostages.

U.S. cargo ship's crew in a standoff with Somali pirates

U.S. Crew in Standoff With Pirates Off Somalia Coast
By SHARON OTTERMAN and MARK MAZZETTI

Hours after pirates commandeered a United States-flagged container ship with 20 American crew members off the coast of Somalia on Wednesday, the pirates and crew appeared to be in a standoff, with the ship under control of its crew once again but the skipper a captive of the pirates.

There were conflicting reports about the drama unfolding on the container ship, the Maersk Alabama — the first ship with an American crew to be seized by pirates in the Horn of Africa, one of the most notoriously lawless zones on the high seas. By late afternoon Washington time, when it was night off Somalia, the situation was unresolved, although there had apparently been no bloodshed.

Several American warships were headed for the area. The vessels reportedly included a destroyer, the U.S.S. Bainbridge, which can steam at more than 30 knots and can launch helicopters. Based on early reports that the closest ships were some 345 miles from the scene at the time of the hijacking, they could be expected to arrive in the area by late Wednesday night, Eastern time, or daylight Thursday off Somali.

Obama tries to unite Iraq factions..he probably will

In Baghdad, Obama Presses Iraqi Leader to Unite Factions
By STEVEN LEE MYERS and HELENE COOPER

CAMP VICTORY, Iraq — President Obama made an unannounced trip to Iraq on Tuesday, his first visit as commander in chief to the site of one of the two wars he inherited and must now see through to an end.

Reiterating his pledge to end a war he opposed from the start, he told a cheering crowd of American troops that it was time for Iraqis “to take responsibility for their country and for their sovereignty.” Later, with a hint of impatience in his words, he urged Iraq’s leaders to unite the country’s deeply divided ethnic and sectarian factions and to incorporate them all into government and security forces.

“It is time for us to transition to the Iraqis,” Mr. Obama told hundreds of American troops jammed into Al Faw Palace, an imposing sandstone building in an artificial lake that once belonged to Saddam Hussein. The uniformed crowd greeted that remark specifically with rousing applause.

Since becoming president less than three months ago, Mr. Obama has moved swiftly to reshape the war in Iraq. He announced plans to withdraw all combat forces by August 2010, as he sought to shift the military’s focus to the troubled war in Afghanistan.

Mayor of Phoenix,Arizona wants build up on border w/Mexico

Phoenix mayor welcomes border buildup
By JACQUES BILLEAUD, Associated Press Writer Jacques Billeaud, Associated Press Writer Wed Mar 25, 7:27 pm ET

PHOENIX – Posing as police officers, gunmen in bulletproof vests pulled over a motorist, took him to a Phoenix house, bound him with zip ties and held him for a $30,000 ransom in an abduction that may have been carried out by Mexican drug smugglers.

The abduction earlier this month was one of nearly 1,000 kidnappings reported in Phoenix over the past three years in a surge of lawlessness so terrifying that the mayor welcomed the news this week that Washington is sending more manpower and equipment to the Mexican border, 180 miles to the south.

"It's a good first step, but we'll need to do more," said Mayor Phil Gordon, who had pleaded with Congress for help.

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it will dispatch nearly 500 more federal agents to the border, along with X-ray machines and drug-sniffing dogs, to stop the spillover of violence into the U.S. from Mexican drug- and immigrant-smugglers.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the move is just a first step and that National Guardsmen might also be sent, something Texas Gov. Rick Perry has requested.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid her first visit to Mexico and pledged that the U.S. will help Mexico fight its murderous drug cartels, a battle that has cost more than 7,000 lives south of the border.

WTF?! Russian advertisement for ice cream is racism towards Obama..Hi Haters:)

Russian ads using Obama spark racism complaints

MOSCOW (AFP) — Obama ice cream, anyone? Chocolate-vanilla ice cream is one of several Russian products being marketed using America's first black president, even as critics call the ads racist.

Other ads featuring US President Barack Obama have promoted tanning salons and tooth-whitening services.

But the creator of one Obama-themed ad -- for ice cream bars which have a chocolate-flavoured centre embedded in a layer of vanilla -- insisted Friday that it was not racist and should be seen as a joke.

The ad for Duet ice cream bars features a smiling, cartoonish black man flashing a V-for-Victory sign in front of the US Capitol, along with the Russian slogan: "Everyone's talking about it: dark inside white!"

Some blasted the ad as insensitive after it surfaced on English-language websites this week. "This is just racist," said one visitor to the Ads of the World website, while another asked: "Is the ice cream as tasteless as the ad?"

Bush's first speech as Ex-President is a bad picnic

Protests greet Bush's first speech as ex-president
By Jeffrey Jones Jeffrey Jones Tue Mar 17, 5:59 pm ET

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – More than 100 protesters chanted "war criminal" and flung shoes in Calgary on Tuesday, angry that former U.S. President George W. Bush was in the Canadian city to give his first speech since leaving the White House.

At least two demonstrators were hauled away by police after brief skirmishes, as 1,500 business people in the oil patch city waited outside a convention center for an hour to pass through tight security and enter the C$400-a-plate ($315) luncheon.

Media were barred from covering the invitation-only event, during which Bush had been expected to reflect on his eight years as president.

According to sources who attended, he conceded that his administration spent its final days "bailing water" to keep the U.S. economy afloat.

However, the Obama administration should not let government become a substitute for the free market, and it should also avoid becoming more protectionist on trade matters, he was said to have remarked.

Although he was not Bush's first choice as president, Barack Obama has his full support, he said.

Cuba and Venezuela could provide bases for Russian Bombers

Report: Cuba, Venezuela could host Russian bombers
By DAVID NOWAK, Asssociated Press Writer David Nowak, Asssociated Press Writer 1 hr 28 mins ago

MOSCOW – A Russian Air Force chief said Saturday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered an island as a temporary base for strategic Russian bombers, the Interfax news agency reported.

The chief of staff of Russia's long range aviation, Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev, also said Cuba could be used to base the aircraft, Interfax reported.

The Kremlin, however, said the situation was hypothetical.

"The military is speaking about technical possibilities, that's all," Alexei Pavlov, a Kremlin official, told The Associated Press. "If there will be a development of the situation, then we can comment," he said.

Zhikharev said Chavez had offered "a whole island with an airdrome, which we can use as a temporary base for strategic bombers," the agency reported. "If there is a corresponding political decision, then the use of the island ... by the Russian Air Force is possible."
