Two people were killed and dozens were injured this afternoon as two powerful explosions detonated in quick succession near the Boston Marathon finish line in Boston’s Back Bay section, turning a scene of athletic celebration into bloody chaos.
A third explosion was reported at the John F. Kennedy Library in the city’s Dorchester section, said Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis. Authorities were treating it as related to the first two.
Two more explosive devices were found and dismantled, The Associated Press reported. The Federal Aviation Administration announced a ground stop for Logan International Airport until further notice; it wasn’t clear if the ground stop was related to the blasts.
Boston area hospitals reported at least 90 people were being treated for blast injuries. Boston Medical Center was among those receiving the most, with 20 patients, including two children. Most of the patients had lower leg injuries.
President Obama has been informed of the incident and has directed his administration to provide whatever assistance is necessary in the investigation and response, a White House official said on background. Governor Deval Patrick said in a statement that it was a “horrific day in Boston” and that authorities were focusing on making sure the area around the Copley Square finish line was safe and secured. He urged everyone to stay away from the area.
